Biomechanical Running & Cycling Evaluations

InStep provides several types of running and cycling evaluations to help athletes reach their potential and avoid injury.

Running Evaluations:

Biomechanical Footwear Evaluation
includes a biomechanical assessment of your lower extremity mechanics by a physical therapist. This assessment includes evaluation of your lower extremity function while standing on both legs, single-leg standing, squatting on both legs, single-leg squatting, walking and running. It also includes a lower extremity range-of-motion assessment, and a videotaped analysis of you walking and running. Specific shoe fit and function are determined and confirmed by slow motion, frame-by-frame replay.
This evaluation is appropriate for people who want to determine which shoe will provide maximum benefit for their individual biomechanics. It will also identify whether there are biomechanical problems that are causing or could lead to injury, as well as whether the person might benefit from a shoe insert or orthotic.

Comprehensive Running Injury Evaluation consists of a full clinical evaluation by a physical therapist, diagnosis and treatment of an injury, a complete Biomechanical Footwear Analysis (described above), recommendation for footwear and/or orthotics, and a corrective prescription exercise program to rehabilitate or prevent injury. This evaluation is appropriate for the person who has developed an injury limiting or affecting performance, has a history of recurring injuries, or wants a comprehensive preventative running exercise program

Performance Evaluation is conducted by a physical therapist and is designed to enhance the runner’s performance. This evaluation is for runners who want to be faster but are new to speed work, want to incorporate running drills, or are unsure how to transition into more minimalist footwear. The physical therapist doing a performance evaluation utilizes video assessment to evaluate running form, running posture, stride rate and foot mechanics. S/he then provides recommendations for modifying or improving running form to enhance your running.

Cycling Evalutions:

Cycling evaluations are performed with an “optimal” cycling position in mind that optimizes aerodynamics and output efficiency. However, many cyclists do not have the internal ability to achieve these positions due to flexibility issues or inherent joint limitations. In these situations, forcing the body into a more aerodynamic position can cause compensations in other parts of the body and be less efficient for the cyclist, which can lead to pain and potential injury.

Standard Bike Fit is a 30-minute assessment of your current position with adjustments of cleats, seat position and front-end position, as needed. Recommendations are provided for equipment modification, as needed, if current equipment cannot attain appropriate positioning.

Comprehensive Cycling Evaluation is performed by a physical therapist and includes a cycling-specific clinical and biomechanical evaluation of your joint motions, muscle flexibility, strength and structural alignments to determine the source of your cycling injury and develop a corrective exercise strategy to eliminate your pain and attain a more efficient cycling position with correct biomechanics. This evaluation also includes adjustment of cleats; recommendations for posting on cleats or orthotics, if needed; and seat and handlebar positioning. Video assessment is utilized as needed. The comprehensive assessment takes approximately one hour. If you have an injury, or are having pain in the low back, neck, hip, knee, hamstrings, calf, or tingling in your hands, a comprehensive assessment is right for you.
